Last season, the Wildcats lost all three of their matchups against the Red Raiders in blowout fashion. The tables turned this year in what has been a house of horror for the Wildcats in recent memory.

“They were our kryptonite last year,” said head coach Brad Wetzel. “Tonight, the guys that were on last year’s team, I think had a little extra pep in their step.”

Latrobe came into the game dropping their last three games [Hempfield, Mars, and Gateway], which is one less than they lost all regular season a year ago. Facing their first test of adversity of the season, the call was answered in a resounding way.

“There were times in just about every game, so far, that I’ve seen moments where that’s what I’ve envisioned,” said Wetzel. “I don’t think we were getting sustained minutes of that play. I think tonight was as close as we’ve come to playing a complete game.”

Latrobe quickly jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Not only were the Wildcats relentless on the offensive end, but their defense turned away anything Uniontown tried. A dominant first half saw the Wildcats lead by 28 in the second quarter and take a 41-21 lead into halftime.
“I think it was a byproduct of some really good and intense practices, and that has to continue,” said Wetzel.
The Red Raiders had no answers for Dom Scarton, as he led the way with 25 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats, including seven three-pointers.

“I thought his focus was tremendous,” said Wetzel. “He’s a terrific shooter. But it was the floor game that impressed tonight with his rebounds and assists.”

Andy Tatsch also added 17 points (11 in the first half), Ian DeCerb had 10 points, and Robert Young had nine points. Both Tatsch and DeCerb had double-doubles (DeCerb with 11 rebounds, and Tatsch with 10 rebounds.
Cam Dugan had 18 points for Uniontown as their leading scorer.

The Wildcats never let their feet off the gas as they outscored the Red Raiders 41-22 in the second half en route to an 82-43 final, earning their first section win of the season.

“It’s nice to get a night like tonight to let the guys feel that sense of victory,” said Wetzel.
As they collect their best and most resounding win in the early part of their season, the Wildcats
hope that their previous results and this game can be a building block for strong and consistent
play throughout the season.

“We’ve made steps towards our identity,” said Wetzel. “We’re trying to do things in such a
different way that I think the progress is going to be slow and a little bit of a rollercoaster.”
The Wildcats (3-3, 1-1) are back on the road on Friday as they travel to Laurel Highlands (4-3,
0-2) for another section matchup against the Mustangs.
